Wampum, PA - May 19, 2017 – It’s almost 9,000 miles by airplane from Durban, South Africa, to Pittsburgh International Race Complex (PittRace), but for Yamalube/Westby Racing’s “Durban Dynamo” Mathew Scholtz, it sure felt like home.

 

At the Official Dunlop/MotoAmerica Test held on Wednesday and Thursday at PittRace, Mathew was the fastest overall rider--in any class--on the track. Over the span of two days and eight combined Superbike/Superstock 1000 test sessions, Mathew was consistently at or near the top of the charts and, when all was said and done, his lightning-fast laptime of 1:38.588, recorded during the eighth and final 50-minute session, was faster than anyone else.

 

And, what is especially remarkable is that Mathew was riding his #11 Superstock 1000-spec Yamalube/Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 among the factory Superbikes that included two-time and defending MotoAmerica Champion Cameron Beaubier, four-time AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes, 2010 Moto2 World Champion Toni Elias, and 2007 AMA Supersport Champion Roger Hayden, among other notables.

“As it’s been all season long thus far, PittRace was another brand-new track for me, but this time, it was a brand-new track for everyone else, too! So, we finally had a ‘level playing field’ and I wasn’t at a disadvantage. I didn’t have to play ‘catch-up’ in learning a track that everyone else already knows, so that was a big plus for us. It was a test, though, first and foremost, and not a race, but the team and I are very pleased with our results. We were able to work on our setup, fine-tune the electronics, and also try out some different Dunlop tires. I really like the track a lot, and it seems to suit my riding style, as well as the characteristics of my Yamalube/Westby Racing R1. I can’t wait to come back to PittRace in August!”

 

Mathew and the Yamalube/Westby Racing team will be back in action on June 2-4 for the Dunlop Championship At Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI.
