Tulsa, OK – August 8, 2018 –

Round 7 of the 2018 MotoAmerica Superbike Championship gets under way this Friday at Sonoma Raceway smack-dab in the middle of California’s wine country.

Mathew Scholtz and the Yamalube/Westby Racing team moved back into third place in the season points standings on the strength of their solid performance in Utah last month, and they’re looking to keep the momentum going as they compete in the Cycle Gear Championship of Sonoma. Spraying the celebratory bubbly is definitely one of the weekend goals.

Sonoma Raceway’s 2.52-mile, 12-turn road course features 160 feet of elevation change from its highest point (Turn 3a, 174 feet) to its lowest point (Turn 10, 14 feet), and the track suits the #11 Yamalube/Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike quite well. With the bike in Superstock 1000 trim last year at Sonoma, Mathew finished 5th overall in race one and 4th overall in race two.

“Sonoma was a really good round for us last year, and now that our R1 is a full-on Superbike, it’s an even better bike than it was last year. So, we’re definitely hoping for a couple of podium results this weekend. It’s good to be back in third place in the Championship, but (Josh) Herrin is only one point behind us, so we’ve still got a lot of work to do. I’ve been training hard, and these final few tracks on the schedule should be good for us. I felt like I was a little bit too conservative at Utah, and there are some good places to pass at Sonoma. So, I think I can take some calculated risks this weekend, unlike last year when winning the Superstock 1000 title was first on my mind. Podiums are important, though, for the team and our sponsors. I’m not saying that I’m going to try to win it or bin it, but going into Sonoma this year is quite different than it was last year.”

Superbike Qualifying Practice sessions begin on Friday, and Superbike Superpole (Qualifying) is on Saturday at 11:30 AM Pacific Time. Superbike Race 1 will go green on Saturday at 3:30 PM Pacific, and Superbike Race 2 is on Sunday also at 3:30 PM Pacific.
